8/5/2009 After letting the cowl cure for almost 48 hours, it was time to find out if I had either done it right, or successfully glued the cowl halves together...first I moved the cowl off of it's nose to see how bad the slurry had flowed out the bottom. This pic was after I took off the outer layer of tape.
Here's a close up with a bunch of arrows pointing to the flow (I found a cool new arrow and had to use a bunch of em)...the outer layer of tape worked great here to keep it from leaking on to the ground, and kept it to a small area.
So since it did flow outside the ring and the clay, I did, more or less, glue the halves together. Luckily, it's a very thin layer, and it was really easy to split with an exacto and a flat head screw driver.
The rings are in there REALLY tight, so I think this is going to work great! After I got the rings out, I started cleaning up the clay and sanding the epoxy that flowed out. After I got a nice, smooth shape on the outside, I stuck the rings back in the cowl and fit the top and bottom cowl again just to check out how it looks...and take a blurry picture.
I am really happy with this! I have a bit more filling and sanding to do to make the cowl flush with the rings, but it's looking really good.
This was quite nerve-wracking to do considering how fast the slurry sets up when using a large amount of mix, but it worked out, and the results are pleasing. I had to send my induction ring back to Will James because I accidentally ordered the medium ring, and I need the small one. So while I wait for that exchange, I'll be working on getting the air box mounted over the next couple of sessions I think... 2.25 hours |
