Aircraft Engines

  OX-340S Stroker (ECi), O-360, IO-360, IO-375  177-205 horsepower, air cooled

Aerosport has an incredible reputation, and produce an engine of your choice, using the parts of your choice, with a wide selection of colors and options.  Prices are in line with everyone else on this list.  The yellow and black engine is an IO-360 with about 200hp.  They have recently come up with a stroked version of the 360 to make it an O/IO-375 with standard compression putting out around 200hp.

   6A-350-C1R, 220 horsepower, air cooled

I've been talking with Franklin Engines in Poland (where they are now produced) about using this engine for my airplane.  They are planning to purchase a flying RV later this year to develop firewall forward stuff for the RV series.  The engine is a 220hp six cylinder engine that is most notable for it's smooth operation because of a characteristic attributed to the fluid damper on the end of the crank opposite the prop flange.  These are in use worldwide, and most significantly in the Stinson 108 line.  There are STC's popping up for installations in all kinds of Cessna's, as well as the awesome Swift.  The cost of this engine puts in way ahead of any of the clone engines.  The pic below is how it will look installed in an RV-8.  I have a friend that has one installed in his CH640, and I'll get more pics of his engine posted soon.

   TMX-360, TMX-IO-360-F 180 horsepower, air cooled

Mattituck has one of the best reputations in the industry for quality of product and service/customer satisfaction.  They build a "clone" of the traditional Lycoming IO-360 engine.  Compression ratios can be changed by utilizing different pistons to allow for unleaded fuel, or higher power output.  They have a FADEC (the red engine) option that eliminates the mixture control in favor of a computer controller that is automatic.  The first engine pictured is exactly how I want my engine painted, except the valve covers and push rod tubes will be black or chrome.

OX-340 (ECi), O-360, IO-390  177-210 horsepower, air cooled

I've talked with Allan Barrett in person at one of the shows, and I have to say I was impressed with how many questions he could answer, and never gave me the feeling that I was taking up his time.  They build engines in the same manner as Aerosport and Attaway, with many options included in the standard package.  They are the originators of the IO-390 experimental engine (pictured).

ECi IOX-340 Stroker 185 horsepower, air cooled

This was a surprise engine at Sun N Fun this year, and I expect to see many more surprises as far as engine technology goes for many trade shows to come.  The IOX-340 is a stroked IO-320 engine that puts out a very respectable 185hp.  I'm really only looking for 180-190hp anyway, so this engine is a great compromise in weight and power.  The only drawback here, is that ECi is saying that this engine will run on 100LL only.  Let's hope they are wrong.  It's not installed in a flying airplane yet, so we'll have to wait and see on this one.  I heard that an ECi rep is installing one in his RV-8.  We may know sooner than later!

   XS-IO-360, 180hp, air cooled

Penn Yan Aero has been an industry leader for over 60 years.  Their New York factory produces certified Lycoming and Continental rebuilt engines, and Custom and Experimental engines.  The package they've put together appears to be the best value for your money out there, and from I've heard, they are a top notch company to work with when it comes to customer service and satisfaction.

Superior XP-360 180 horsepower, air cooled

Here's another of the so called "clone" engine manufacturers.  Superior has introduced such technology as roller tappets, and increase reliability and smoothness of the engine.  These will eventually become standard on all aircraft engines.  They have recently been purchased by Thielart out of Germany, so we'll have to wait and see what happens with prices.  This could be a good thing!

5100 170 horsepower (180 at 3,000 rpm), air cooled

This is an EIGHT cylinder engine, traditionally opposed, air cooled, and direct drive.  These are built in Australia, and they do have a few flying in RV's around the world.  The installation isn't as clean as I'd like to see it at this point, but the engine is just beautiful!!  So far, the only options for props are wood and composite, both fixed pitch and ground adjustable.

So that's the list of engines I'm watching.  I do have my choices narrowed down to three or four of these, but I'll keep that to myself for now.  Oh, except this one!

YEAH!!  Rolls Royce V-12 baby!  That's the ticket!!
