11/25/2006 I didn't get as much done on the wingtips as I had hoped today. But, I did fly with some buddies of mine for a delicious lunch! It was a beautiful day, and there were a BUNCH of airplanes at the destination airport in Mattoon, IL. Everything from a little Pulsar taildragger to a T-34 and a Navion! Two RV's (one with us) and several Mooney's! It's great to see this these days! Anyway...this morning before I left, I cut the access holes in each rib. When I returned, I smoothed all the edges of the polystyrene foam with fine sandpaper, and then dove in to the fiberglass. This is kinda neat, but not, at the same time. It's sticky, but manageable with gloves on. I used a brush to lay up the fiberglass epoxy, which worked great! You can see the fiberglass cloth on the table behind the tip. I made a lay up on the top and bottom of the rib, and also laid some glass over the hinge/rivets. The fiberglass is wrapped around the back side of the access holes to provide better strength in the thin areas. One down, one to go...
