Today I took the afternoon off work since I was there for 14 hours yesterday, and I have to fly tonight.  I had a little time this afternoon to sneak an hour and a half in the garage to get the elevator horns drilled.

Oh, first, I got my braided steel brake lines from Bonaco yesterday.  These things are sweet, and will replace the nylon plastic tubes that come with the kit.

Okay, now lets get to the elevator horns.  I started out by making sure the left side was the aft side, and marked the location of the pilot hole according to plans.

Then the #30 pilot hole was drilled.

I used several layers of aluminum that I had laying around as scrap, and made a spacer block that fit perfectly in the space between the horns.  I clamped them all together and set them up on the drill press, and drilled thru all of them to get a nice perpendicular hole.  Then I clamped them to the horns, got em all straight, and drilled across to the other horn.

Digital cameras are weird about how pictures are presented sometimes.  I assure you, these were PERFECTLY square with the horns.

After the pilot hole was drilled thru, I used a couple of straight flute bits that I borrowed from Rob to open them up to full size #12 for the AN3 bolt.  Pretty slick!

The only other thing I got done before I had to go in to get ready for my trip, was to clamp the HS to the fuselage.  This is just temporary until I get the shims made so I can drill it in place.

Cool!
