9/17/2007 Tonight I wanted to get the VS set (I did!). To do that I had to make sure all was correct regarding measurements in all directions. To start, I had to get the F-712D elevator up stop riveted and bolted on. Before I took the bolts out of the VS spar, I clamped the 712D down nice and tight with C clamps.
I then removed the VS and marked the side of the fuselage for the bolt hole location (using marks I had previously made on the 712 bulkhead). This should allow me to lay a rule across the flanges, and mark the locations before drilling the bottom bolts.
I made the same marks on the other side. Then I drilled the 712D to the aft deck and longerons, removed it to deburr and prime, then riveted and bolted it back in place.
Yesterday I mentioned that there was an extra washer that goes on the left side of the VS spar to aid in the 1/4" offset of the VS. Here's what I mean-
The VS goes back in place, and that washer is sandwiched between the 712D and the spar.
I then clamped the front VS spar to the 781 plate and the HS front spar. I adjusted this until I got the rudder hinges lined up so they are perfectly straight, and also set the 1/4" leading edge offset (after calling my bud Rob about how to reference that 1/4" offset).
After checking everything over numerous times, I drilled the holes in the mounting plate and the HS spar to plate.
I couldn't get to the top row of holes in the plate, and I'm not really sure how I am going to get to them. Even the angle drill won't quite fit in there. One thing is certain...I won't be drilling those holes while it rests on the fuselage. That's where I ended up for the night. I can sleep well knowing that it's all straight! 2.75 hours |
