9/22/2008 Tonight my dad came over for a little bit to help me get the firewall eyeball fittings installed. I bought some firewall sealant to install these for good. I worked on the inside tightening the nut while he was on the outside holding the fitting in place.
After we chatted for a bit and he headed back home, and I worked on installing the brake lines. I borrowed Carl's Rolo-flare tool yesterday while I was over at his house helping him remove one wing on his 9A and fit the second wing. Both ends of the brake lines were done in no time.
Of course I still have to tape and secure the lines to the engine mount and gear legs, then torque the fittings, but this is good for now. After that, I went back to the LSE crank ring installation. I needed to get one of the prop flange bushings out in order to mark (and drill later) the holes for mounting the bracket. I tried this method first...a bolt threaded to the end of the bushing is used to push the bushing in to the oversized socket on the back side.
WARNING: Unless you have a good quality C-clamp (this one isn't), DON'T DO THIS!! As I was tightening the clamp down, the pot metal gave way, and it shattered right in front of me. I'm fine, but I should've known better. That made me a little leery about doing it this way again, even with a better quality clamp, so I decided to put some washers over the threads of the bolt, tighten it down, then lightly tap on the bolt with a claw hammer. This worked great! You can see the bushing sliding out below.
With the bushing out, I could then line up the timing ring to mark the holes for drilling the bolt holes.
I simply moved the crank around and marked the five holes. I need a #2 centering drill bit if I can find one, otherwise a #6 bit is drilled in to the block 5/8", then the holes are tapped 1/4-20. Easy right? We'll see... 2.0 hours |
