December 2005 Fiberglass 12/4/2005 After waiting for a week longer than I expected, I finally got my order from Spruce yesterday that contained several items including the T-88 glue I've been waiting for. So I cleaned both the fiberglass and the aluminum strips, and glued 'em in place.
I used everyday paper clips to hold the strips in place. Regular clamps would put too much pressure on the surfaces, and squeeze the glue to the sides. This has to cure overnight, so tomorrow I'll be drilling and riveting before starting in on the glass work. 0.75 hours I also had some time when I finished this up to rearrange the shop to make room for the wing cradles that I'll be constructing. If you haven't seen my shop before I moved the tables, look here.
12/5/2005 The T-88 glue worked great! It cured and bonded the AL strip to the fiberglass overnight, and was ready to be riveted.
After the above pic was taken, I drilled the holes in the AL using the previously drilled holes in the fiberglass as a guide. Then I cleco'd the tip in place, and blind riveted it on with CS4-4 rivets.
Now I'm at a standstill until my chapter tech advisor can come over to inspect what I've done. I probably should've waited on this tip, but I realized that after the fact. Oh well, there's plenty more to look at. Hopefully he'll be able to come over this week. 0.5 hours 12/10/2005 No building update, but I just wanted to make a note that I am still waiting for my tech advisor to come over. He's been sick all week, so he won't be over until he is feeling better. That's fine, 'cuz I don't want to get sick!! 12/13/2005 I decided that while I'm waiting for my emp to be inspected, I would go ahead and make the necessary trims on the tips for the HS, VS, and elevators. I'm also gonna glue the AL in place, but I didn't have any on hand tonight. I'll get some tomorrow. I used the Dremel tool to make the rough trims, and fit 'em in place. They look good so far...
1.0 hour 12/15/2005 I remembered to pick up some AL today for reinforcing the tips. I cut 'em all to size and marked for positioning...
...then I deburred the edges with the scotchbrite wheel...
...and then mixed up some T-88 glue and clamped them in place.
Those will sit overnight to cure. I don't have enough small clamps to glue the VS and elevator tips in place, so those will have to wait for these to cure. 0.75 hours 12/29/2005 Woohoo!! I'm back in the shop! So, it's been 14 days...man, I got a lot of time to make up for! I fitted and drilled/cleco'd the HS tips in place, and marked them for final filing.
I left those cleco'd in place for the time being, and got the T-88 glue out again to glue the AL strips in place on the elevator tips. With those glued and clamped, I called it a night.
Doesn't sound like much but it filled two solid hours! On a side note, my tech advisor is feeling better and will be over on Saturday to inspect my work! 2.0 hours 12/30/2005 Nothing major to report from today. I glued the AL strips on the VS tip. They will cure overnight. I also drilled out three rivets that were bothering me on the trim tab hinge on the left elevator and re-set those. 0.25 hours DISCLAIMER This website is intended for entertainment purposes only.
